Biodiversity

Green School.
On Monday,19th February, Teddy Browne from Cork County Council visited our school to assess if we deserved to be awarded our Fifth green flag for Biodiversity or The Garden Flag. Eight boys – Titas Santdinoas, Darragh Conway, Eoin O’Sullivan, Daniel Dillane, Daniel Cleary, Dylan Heaton Jones Conor O’Brien, Ronan Collins and Jason Collins met with Teddy and talked him through the 7 steps which make up the two years of preparation which have gone into this flag; Committee ,Environmental review , Action Plan, Curriculum Links, Monitoring and Evaluation. Having planned our garden, the construction began with our Geodome centrally located along with our wonderful living willow dome. Our sensory path winds its way through our garden which is hugely valuable to our children with ASD and our mainstream students. Our raised beds are allotted to each class and crops are rotated each year. We grow a variety of fruit, vegetables and herbs- often comparing varieties of crops . We have a three section compost centre which reuses the green and brown waste to be reinvested into the garden. Our chickens give life to our garden and the variety of garden birds is increasing all of the time and we encourage butterflies and other wildlife to our garden. Each and every member of our school community realise the value of the garden to our whole community through the different competitions which we have been involved and have had such success with. The publicity our school has received nationally and locally highlights how much closer to nature and understanding biodiversity we now are. Our school garden is part of the West Cork garden trail as a community garden. Visitors are welcome each weekend during the Summer to view our garden. We love to learn from our garden.
